No Sex = Frustrated Marriage: Dr. Sean Breen Explains Hormone Replacement

In my day to day business I get to speak to many married men and women about their health and happiness. As part of my initial consult I always ask them about the health of their marriage is because an unhappy marriage creates a lot of stress on the body and ultimately leads to suboptimal health. It seems as if an extraordinary amount of couples I speak with are having little to no regular sex and as a result are not happy.

The goal of this post is to:

  1. Let you know that you are not alone

  2. In many cases, there is a biologic explanation in many cases and it can easily be fixed

As part of the initial set of blood work I get on every patient includes all major hormones (testosterone, estradiol, growth hormones, progesterone, thyroid and vitamin D). Not surprisingly, testosterone levels decline and are low in MOST of my patients. Testosterone and estradiol drive libido in both men AND women and when used appropriately works amazingly to restore libido and increase intensity of orgasm. I regularly use testosterone in women to help restore libido and get fantastic results.

The reference ranges for testosterone in women decline as you age, so typically when doctors check women’s levels they are told they are “normal” when in fact they are deficient. The doctor is mistaken in that, yes the patient is normal for their age, but when compared to that of a 18-25 year old women they are deficient. For lab corp, the reference range for free testosterone is 0.0- 2.2 for a 45 year old women, but that reference range was 1.5-4.0 when she was younger. So if she has a level os 0.5 she is told she is normal. This is why most women (and men) are told it’s not their hormone levels. When you give these women testosterone and bring their levels to 3-4 they start feeling much better and sex becomes desirable again. I have treated so many couples whose marriages are restored as a result of a newly discovered sex life.

Here are some other perks of testosterone in women:

  • Protective against breast cancer

  • Maintains lean body and reduces fat

  • Is anti-inflammatory

  • Improves skin thickness and reduces wrinkles

So if you are in a relationship and your libido is gone do yourself a favor and see a doctor who understands the importance of treating both women AND men with testosterone.
